Collins-McCarthy Candy Cards (E135) from 1917

The Collins-McCarthy Baseball Cards were candy cards produced in San Francisco, CA in 1917. The founders were James Joseph Collins and Jeremiah McCarthy. They originally started making candy years earlier, but everything changed after the major San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Up until this point, Collins had never produce non Pacific Cost League cards. They were well known for their production of the Zeenut Cards from the Pacific Coast League. They jumped in with this 200 card set. The cards are black and white, thin stocked cards and sized at 2 x 3-1/4. One of the main challenges of this set is finding cards in high grade condition. With the paper stock so thin; without incredible storage, many of these cards present in poor condition.

Collins “Common Player” Set:

This set consists of 200 cards. These cards share the same design as other cards in this era to include Boston Store, Standard Biscuit, and Weil Baking Cards. This set is loaded with future Hall of Famers (depending on the back sponsor). It is a very large set with many common players. That being said, it is still a good set to work on as many of these coomon cards can be found at extremely reasonable prices. However, the stars will be very expensive. Some of the notable players from this set are Casey Stengel, Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Grover Alexander, Eddie Collins, Chick Gandil, and Ty Cobb.
