The E90-2 American Caramel Cards Pirates Team were produced in 1910 by the American Caramel Company in Philadelphia, PA. Similarly to to other series; each card is cut at a size of 1 1/2 x 2 3/4 and have a color lithograph with backgrounds of either pink, blue, green or red. The cards show the players name and “Pittsburgh” that are located in the white border area of the bottom of the card.
This 1910 series is the smallest of the 3 series which includes only the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates with a total of 11 cards included. Likewise, each reverse is the exact same as the 1909 issue and is printed in black ink that reads “100 subjects”. These cards were originally issued with sticks of caramel candy.
One of the challenges of completing this set is that it is so small, chances are it was only regionally produced. For example, even though it only has 11 cards; it is extremely difficult to find all the cards, even if you were willing to buy them. Fred Clarke is probably the second most difficult card to find; however no where near the most difficult. The key card to the entire set is the Honus Wagner. These are difficult to come by but they turn up. For that reason, expect to pay 4 figures for a nice example. Recent auctions are showing the value of the Wagner is continuing to rise.
