Investing in Baseball Cards

Investing in Baseball Cards….Let me start by saying I am not a financial advisor. I introduce the investment angle as I see more investors taking advantage of the opportunity investing in baseball cards provides. This isn’t to say collecting cards can be a bad investment…just ask the millions of us who have boxes and boxes of 80s and 90s cards at our homes that we just can’t bring ourselves to throw away. The hundreds of rookie cards of Gooden, McGwire, Griffey, etc. We thought we would retire on our trove of riches…..until we realized that everyone else in the world had the same plan of investing in baseball cards, which makes demand for those cards low because everyone as the same cards. I am starting to see investors purchase high-end examples of certain baseball cards. Just recently, a Mickey Mantle rookie card in NM-MT PSA 8 condition sold for $400,000. This same card could have been purchased less than 5 years ago for $75,000. The challenge is finding cards in this type of condition.  On a smaller scale, it seems the same group of buyers are buying anything they can get their hands on that has the name Mantle, Aaron, Clemente, Mays, or Williams. How high will the market go?…that is anyone’s guess. However, in a world where every channel selling gold, silver, oil & gas, etc…why not have some fun and buy something that appears to be very stable and reminds of us of our childhoods!!
