Caramel baseball cards (E series) have become increasingly popular over the years. Many collectors enjoy the art created photographs that are used for the cards. Likewise, many caramel cards were issued at the same time as the well-known tobacco cards. For example, the world famous T206 Honus Wagner is a tobacco card issued during the same time as the caramel cards.
Typically, caramel cards were issued in a small pack with a stick of caramel. Caramel cards were issued in the late 1800s until the early 1930s. The most popular years are from 1908-1921 will several sets produced.
One of the challenges for new collectors of the caramel cards is identification. For instance, there are several issues that have a blank back. Additionally, some have just a list of players. Above all, experience is the only way to really understand and identify these sets. To this day, new finds of these cards constantly update checklists of cards not previously seen.
Similarly, in addition to the back being difficult to recognize, there are several cards that have the same player with different color fronts. In addition, some years have as many as 6 different front colors!
Two of the most popular companies that issued cards were the Philadelphia Caramel Company and the American Caramel Company of Lancaster, PA.
The first series mostly recognized by collectors is the E90-1 Caramel set. This set includes 118 cards. This set is full of Hall of Famer’s. For example; Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Joe Jackson’s Rookie Card are included in this series.
The E90 set seems to be one of the easier one to try. These cards are readily available if you have the budget. However, the Cobb and Jackson will put you back a pretty penny.
1909-1911 were the most influential years of production. Overall, the American Caramel Company produced 6 sets/subsets in 3 years.
In 1909, company advertising was seen on the E92 set with 4 different sponsors: Croft’s Cocoa, Croft’s & Allen, John Dockman & Sons, and Nadja Caramels.
The Philadelphia Caramel Company produced the particularly popular E95 & E96 Sets in 1909-1910. This 2-year 55 card set still remains one of the most affordable and popular sets to date.
